The Social Effects

01/01/1831

The major social effect from the trail of tears is quite upsetting. The truth is, the Native American population decreased severely. Many Native Americans walking on the Trail of Tears ended up with starvation, diseases, hypothermia, and sicknesses. Due to this, over 4,000 Native Americans died along the way, decreasing the Native American population. The overall culture of Native Americans has died down due to the loss of so many Indians. Even today in 2021, the Indian culture is almost extinct.

Why is this important? Lets look at like for the Cherokee tribe before the trail of tears. Before 1721, the Cherokee tribe had a good amount of land ranging from the Atlantic Coast to the Mississippi river. This was around 135,000 square miles. When settlers came to their land, the Cherokee tribe was losing parts of their land that they were living in. Settlers saw this as an opportunity to use the land for vast resources. In 1721, the first piece of land from South Carolina was sold to the Europeans for $5,000. This was the very beginning of taking the Native American land. The Indians tried to keep their land by peacefully arguing in court, but there pleas were ignored. The Cherokees were tricked into a treaty, which gave them 2 years to migrate off their land. Only 2,000 Indians migrated, leaving 16,000 citizens to be FORCED out of their homes. Imagine being forced to relocate when you had the land first. These inhumane actions led to so many deaths that are unforgivable.
